How to Choose an Ecommerce Data Service
"Data service" covers everything from a $37 template to a $5,000/month embedded team. The wrong fit wastes money in both directions — overpaying for capability you won't use, or underpaying for help that never materializes.
When choosing an ecommerce data service, evaluate six things: whether they deliver insight or just reporting, who owns the tools and connectors, how clearly the scope is defined, whether pricing is transparent, how easily you can leave, and whether they can prove past results. The best fit depends on your store's size and how hands-on you want to be — not on who has the flashiest dashboard.
Most owners hire a data service after the same realization: plenty of numbers, no clear answers. Here are the six things worth evaluating before you sign anything.
1. Insight, or just reporting?
A dashboard that shows numbers is reporting. A service that tells you what they mean and what to do is insight. Ask: "When my CAC rises, will you tell me why and what to do — or just show me that it rose?" Reporting is a commodity. Insight is worth paying for.
2. Who owns the tools and connectors?
Connecting Shopify and ad platforms requires paid third-party connectors. Ask who pays for and owns them. If the service owns the stack, everything works as one system but you depend on them. If you own it, you keep the infrastructure if you leave but you maintain it. Neither is wrong — know which you're getting.
3. Is the scope actually defined?
"We'll build you a dashboard" is not a scope. What sources? What metrics? How often updated? What happens when it breaks? A provider who can't define this precisely will under-deliver or nickel-and-dime you later.
4. Is pricing transparent?
Watch for services where the monthly fee excludes tool costs, setup fees, or per-source charges that appear later. The honest ones tell you the full cost — theirs and any tools — before you commit.
5. How easily can you leave?
Month-to-month with clear cancellation is a good sign. Long lock-in contracts for a small store are a red flag. A confident provider doesn't need to trap you.
6. Can they prove it?
Ask for a concrete example of what they changed for a store like yours — a real before-and-after, even anonymized. "We helped a store identify $6K/month in wasted ad spend" is proof. Vague claims about "leveraging synergies" are not.
The honest bottom line
The right service depends on your stage. A store under $20K/month may be better served by a good checklist and DIY than any retainer. A store spending real money on ads it can't evaluate needs insight, not another tool. Match the help to the problem — and be wary of anyone who recommends their most expensive tier before understanding your business.
